In the late 1990’s, \u00a0I received a report from Materials Evaluation Laboratory. \u00a0The report is copyrighted. \u00a0The pump company had cleaned\u00a0UHP WJ on panels supplied by a major oil company. \u00a0Materials Evaluation Laboratory analyzed the substrate with microscopy and metallurgy compared to abrasive blasting. \u00a0This was at the time that UHP WJ was scarce and people were wondering what was happening at the surface. Would the surface be stressed?<\/p>\n
Their conclusions:<\/p>\n
1. \u00a0Pressurized water effectively removed rust and other\u00a0corrosion products from metal surfaces. This was done
\nwith minimal disturbance of microstructural features.
\n2. Methods using abrasive particles were necessary for the\u00a0removal of adherent mill scale. Those techniques cause
\nsevere distortion of the metal surface.
\n3. The pressurized water method was considered the best\u00a0preparatory cleaning for non-destructive inspection.
\nIt offered a more “authentic” representation of the\u00a0surface than the other methods evaluated.<\/p>\n
